CASA volunteers face unique challenges during pandemic

Social distancing is changing the way volunteers advocate for foster children in Central Pennsylvania.

“We can’t go visit the children in person, and so we’re seeing them through FaceTime or Zoom or some virtual way,” volunteer Wanda Heise said.

Heise, like many others, is adapting to this new “normal.”

However, advocating for foster children from a distance comes with some challenges.

“It’s also really difficult with the younger children who we can’t really sit down and have a chat with,” Heise said.

Volunteers promote the child’s best interest and report to a county judge who then decides how to handle the legal case.

Heise’s just one of about two dozen in Dauphin County’s program, including eight new members who were sworn-in virtually Tuesday afternoon.
